Subject: Yvette Cooper and ME/CFS - misquote
Sir
I enjoyed reading the recent Yvette Cooper interview. Nonetheless as her
consultant when she suffered from ME/CFS (which she put into the public
domain in an article in the Independent and also the Daily Mail) I have to
put right the assertion that "90% of people recover from ME" The
correct
statistic is that 90% of recoveries occur in the first year, not 90% of
people recover. I would be very grateful if you could arrange to publish
this correction as the misconception that "90% of people recover"
distorts
the true picture of a disease in our community which wrecks the lives of in
excess of two hundred thousand people, both sufferers and their carers.

13 November 2010NICE is undertaking its scheduled 3-yearly review of its 'CFS/ME' Clinical Guideline 53 during a very short-lived consultation period of 1st to 14th November 2010. The executive view NICE has already declared for its review however is that it sees no reason not to leave CG53 unchanged: by claiming there is no new evidence that warrants rewriting of their original Guideline published in August 2007. See the NICE web addresses below for further details.

Another secret
file on ME/CFS comes to light
Margaret Williams
It is notable that two of the funders of the UK PACE Trial on
"CFS/ME" (the MRC and the DWP) have separate secret files on ME/CFS
held at the UK National Archives.
Firstly, the MRC files (Item reference FD 23/4553/1) containing records and
correspondence
covering the period 1988-1997, which are closed for 73 years (ie.until January
2071):
http://tinyurl.com/yfdt8gm
And secondly, the DWP files (Piece reference BN 141/1) which have only recently
come to light and refer to "Medical Policy" on ME/CFS, covering the
period from 1984 to 1993. They are closed for 78 years (ie. until January
2072):
http://tinyurl.com/2w9gs8z
It is also worth recalling that members of the CMO's Working Group were
threatened with having to sign the Official Secrets Act and in June 2000 were
issued with a warning that even if not covered by the Act, the status of other
documents referring to ME/CFS was "RESTRICTED", a classification that
relates to "sensitive issues" and which, if disclosed, might carry a
severe penalty. The notification further stated: "Papers not so marked are
nevertheless considered confidential....The presumption is that such papers
would in due course be made available to the public...but that the timing and
means of release should be controlled by the authors...or by the secretariat,
as appropriate".
That the Official Secrets Act might have been invoked was confirmed by the
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health, Lord Hunt
of Kings Heath, in a letter dated 23rd October 2000 and it is notable that the
reasons he gave for protecting information relating to the work of the CMO's
Working Group on ME/CFS were that it may be: "confidential information
obtained by a Crown servant from a foreign state or international
organisation" and "information in the possession of a Crown servant
the disclosure of which would impede a criminal process".
The question arises, are there any other illnesses where information is
classified for such a long period - the customary period being 30 years, not 78
years? For example, it is known that papers relating to multiple sclerosis are
locked away for only 30 years.
What is so secret about ME/CFS that both the MRC and the DWP feel the need to
lock away documents relating to this illness?

The UK Medical Research Council has a secret file on
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) that contains records and correspondence since
at least 1988; the file is held in the UK Government Archive at Kew and cannot
be opened until 2023. This present document is an
overview of the misinformation and
contradictions about Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
(ME/CFS) that have pervaded some UK Departments of State and other agencies
since 1988. It also considers the involvement of certain UK psychiatrists
who have proven vested interests in the propagation of this misinformation that
is contrary to world wide scientific evidence and that for two decades has resulted
in the medical abuse of UK patients with ME/CFS.

RECOGNITION OF MYALGIC ENCEPHALOMYELITIS
December
8, 2003
Public
Statement To:
The
CFS Advisory Committee, US Department of Health and Human Services and Dr Fields,
for Secretary Thompson
Why
Are We All Here?
Since
the 1934 California outbreak of Atypical Polio, a long record of cases and
outbreaks of our disease have been observed. There was an increasing frequency
of outbreaks during the 1950's, which brought greater interest to our disease.
Dr Melvin Ramsay and others further defined the illness, and Myalgic
Encephalomyelitis (ME) became the recognized term for this neurologic
infectious disease.

To
end speculation about authenticity, Margaret Williams has released her copy of

his notes, a * indicates where he showed illustrative slides during his
lecture. The lecture was indeed audio-taped but the tape has never been
publicly released.

In
light of the information published in the Medical Research Council Research
Advisory Group (RAG) Draft Report for Public Consultation on "CFS/ME"
Research Strategy dated 17th Dec. 2002, Margaret
Williams has asked me to publish her critique of the Report published by the Royal Australasian College
of Physicians.
This
internationally criticised RACP Report published during 2001 was used, widely
referred to and relied upon by members of the UK Medical Research Council (RAG)
when they compiled their draft research strategy document.
A
copy of the RACP critique by Margaret Williams has been sent to the Medical
Research Council Research Advisory Group for the attention of Elizabeth
Mitchell.
In
light of all the constructive and highly detailed criticisms of the MRC (RAG)
Draft Report, it is hoped that note will be made during the forthcoming review
process.

In

problems of management within the MRC; the title is Management
at the MRC: old fashioned and in need of reform. (ref: BMJ
1993:306:1627-1628). In the same issue, there are two papers by
Gillett and Harrow about the MRC.
The
ME community may be interested in all three articles, extracts from which are set out below; people may wish to
know if anything has really changed in the last decade.

Acknowledgement and Thanks:
AMEA is grateful for the sterling work of former medical-legal researcher, Margaret Williams, and Professor Malcolm Hooper, Emeritus Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Sunderland University, along with other contributors to the body of work listed/present on this website.
Most of their documentation is located on the ME Action UK website (see link below) which has been compiled by former NHS Radiographer, Stephen Ralph, under difficult circumstances as Stephen is himself very ill.
The ME community owes Malcolm, Margaret and Stephen much.
